ELLEN PECK is a WOMAN WE ADMIRE here at NMNK - An INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY . This is an archived article circa 1976. It goes to show you that many of our issues are still issues.
"The government is not neutral. In addition to the $750 per child exemption allowed by the Internal Revenue Service, the federal government implicitly subsidizes childbearing through welfare, social security and housing policies. The standard argument goes, "It's for the sake of the children." Doesn't it make sense to make not having children just as acceptable?"

SPRING HAS SPRUNG (Funny I think I said that last year) and LOVE IS IN THE AIR !
Hello friends. Spring is in the air. Just wanted to let you know I am still around... and no I have not forgotten about you NMNK's... how could I living it every day myself?
You know, sometimes when you're like me and you just have not prioritized getting married and having children, you feel defensive. That's because we are certainly in a minority. Our agitators like to think we are heartless, cruel, and selfish people... but I think not!
Yes! I have been in love! I'm a human being too. But thus far I have had the strength to reject those who would not make good life partners for me. I don't pray for a husband before I go to bed at night. I am not bitter. I am satisfied to live alone without being lonely! MAYBE I'm FATALISTIC or A TRUE ROMANTIC AT HEART? MAYBE it's all or nothing for me?
Recently I heard from a pen pal of mine who at 32 had never found love. My friend is from a Central American country and he really seemed to be to be "too picky!" Imagine me saying that about anyone! But since he claimed to want to get married and have children, and he seemed to have one old girlfriend he had not given entirely up on and another of several years who seemed to be keeping him at a distance and ignoring his marriage proposals, I wasn't sure what to think!
What if it was HIM?
I really am happy for him now because yes he has met someone, he is in love, she loves him too, and he is planning to marry if the relationship is still as good as it is right now in one years time.
In fact I told him I thought a year was enough to know... Whatever you do, I said, do not let this go on and on to nowhere as you have in the past with other women!
MOSTLY I'M RELIEVED that, as it turns out, all this waiting and hoping he did for the last decade of his (young!) life was not about being a commitmentphobe. He is capable of love and commitment.
That's important because CHOOSING to be a NMNK is also about being capable of love and commitment! Loving yourself above all others on this earth, there are times when sadly, you must let someone go. And a commitment to a RESPONSIBLE LIFESTYLE is very important too! It is what has lead some of us to not have children we cannot provide for, as an example.
Spring has sprung and I hope it is full of love for you - love possible in all its varieties!

HIATUS!
I'm working two jobs and am going on hiatus with this blog. I will be checking in about once a month just to see if any of you have left comments or e-mailed me. I hope that you will look through my archives and find something that inspires you to remain proud of your NEVER MARRIED NO KIDS status!
It seems like those words mostly bring up dating clubs and lonely hearts mourning their fate or feeling angry (as I do sometimes) by being so discriminated against! I hope that the two years that I've been blogging this issue has moved us to awareness, if not resolution of those problems.
Remember you can use comments or e-mail to get in touch with me.
Sending my Best Wishes to My NMNK Brothers and Sisters!
HAPPY 2010!

MONASTIC TENDENCIES !
If you're like me you acknowledge that you have monastic tendencies. You love long hours of aloneness which isn't the same as being lonely. It means being independent and organizing your activities for the day, even if that's reading and sleeping. Uninterrupted Luxury! That is my wish for you during these holidays, that if you want to be alone you can indulge! Sister

THANKSGIVING DINNER ! THOSE NASTY RELATIVES !
Don't know about you but I've had some real nasty "Family" Thanksgiving Dinners!
BECAUSE I BROUGHT A FRIEND WHO HAD NOWHERE ELSE TO GO ALONG, it was assumed that this man was an important relationship...
LIKE, "MAYBE SHE'S GOING TO GET MARRIED!"
The poor guy endured a lot of personal questions, like he was being interviewed to see if he was husband material. A relative had the nerve to tell him I had "Commitment Phobia" which isn't true at all.
So here are some things to be thankful for!
THAT THOSE KIDS RUNNING AROUND THE HOUSE get to go home with someone else at the days end!

DUMPED MY PLATONIC GUY FRIEND BECAUSE HIS NEW GIRLFRIEND...
and HIS KIDS, think he should not have any relationships with "past" women. This slam of BS occurred the other day and through an e-mail communication. My friend and I used to have lunch once or twice a month but a few months ago he seemed to disappear off the map. So, as a friend, I called once in a while, but he would say he was busy at work, or that we would have lunch, and then never seem to get around to calling back. He quit me. So wondering if maybe he was actually in financial trouble (Bernie, you know) or ill, I sent him a message asking him if he was angry with me. Open the conversation a bit, I thought.
Instead I got a message back from him that we could no longer go to lunch because this new girlfriend has moved in with him...
Hey this reminds me of being the single friend who gets dumped right after showing up at the wedding and giving an expensive gift.
ANYONE UNCOUPLED IS UNWANTED! THAT STINKS!
GOOD LUCK GETTING OFF THE SHORT LEASH my EX-FRIEND!

LIBRARY GRANDMA's READ TO KIDS but what about those who NEVER GAVE BIRTH?
At my public library they have a program in which elder women read to children. They are posted as GRANDMOTHERS. Now I can't know if they all are in fact GRANDMOTHERS. The implication is that only old grannies are good for babysitting and reading to their surrogate grandchildren. There are no GRANDFATHERS, and a few pictures posted with these volunteers are of women who look to be very young for grandmother-hood.
