IS YOUR DOG OR CAT YOUR SPOUSE SUBSTITUTE?

Is your dog or cat taking so much of your time, energy, love? that you don't feel the need for a spouse?

(I used to know a woman who wouldn't go to college unless her parents supplied her an apartment where she could live with her dog!)

Or maybe you're looking for love at the dog park?

NMNK and PETS : MARIE CORELLI quote

"I never married because I have three pets at home that answer the same purpose as a husband. I have a dog that growls every morning, a parrot that swears all afternoon and a cat that comes home late at night." - Maria Corelli

CEMETERY DISCRIMINATION : FROM NMNK ARCHIVES

Are you aware that some cemeteries bury "single" people in rows with each other, separate from the double headed tombstones of the married? Now, I first realized this when I was in Santa Cruz, California and doing a tombstone inventory of an old cemetery there. They also had a separate (but close in) area for Chinese and war veterans, and of course this is a lesson in history and the development of a town with ethnic immigration of a few minorities.

I wonder if this has anything to do with beliefs about the resurrection of the dead in the end times/judgement.

Tombstones are often tributes to the best in people but we all know of couples who were horribly married but in death rest aside each other till eternity - or the worms! Walking along in the cemetery you can imagine that they are in eternal life happily with each other, and maybe this notion satisfies their children, but you know better. Besides what ever happened to that marriage vow "Till death?"

I think cemeteries are set up for the married people. But you can pop a spinster or confirmed bachelor down in with the parents' graves too.

REPORT HERE ANY CEMETERIES YOU KNOW THAT WILL NOT PUT SINGLE PEOPLE IN NEAR THE MARRIEDS!

HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO BE CREAMATED SO AS TO NOT DEAL WITH THE FAMILY CEMETERY?

ARE YOU NMNK BECAUSE YOU'RE A CLOSETED GAY ?

It seems everyone who's gay is "OUT" right?

There are gay pride parades in most cities and so many places in the country where you can walk hand in hand (or even wildly make out) with your favorite person of the same gender in public, so what's left to fear?

MANY LIBERAL PEOPLE FORGET THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF  NOT SO LIBERAL PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT OK WITH GAY!   Besides those who are in a questioning phase  about their own sexuality and don't want to say, or are simply more private by nature,  there are those who come from conservative families, have jobs where they've heard the anti gay talk and attitudes expressed so they don't dare come out in their workplace, and those who go to churches that are explicitly not ok with gay such as the Latter Day Saints.

Yes, things may have changed a lot, but maybe not so much.

ARE YOU SECRETLY GAY? WOULD YOU SAY THAT S WHY YOU ARE NMNK?

EASTER THE PAGAN FERTILITY CELEBRATION?! : SISTER SPEAKS!

Seriously, Easter is so intertwined with ancient spring fertility rituals and symbolisms - the egg, the hatching chicks, those bunnies; we know what they do! That's why there's that joke about being reborn as a rabbit in Montana!

Now if you get pregnant in the spring, you're likely to have a baby in the winter, but maybe that was a good thing when are ancestors were hunting and gathering, and mainly caving in cold places. Would there be enough food stored away or found under the snow to survive till spring? Funny how Lent has become a time to FAST! Then comes the Easter basket of PLENTY ; chocolate and marshmallow bunnies, birds, and eggs - covered in foil, and not to forget jelly beans. One of my cousins actually boils and dyes eggs and then bakes them in a sweet bread.

What's a person who has been trying to avoid fertility their whole life supposed to do? (If there were anything to these spring fertility rituals and rites, I suppose not much, other than avoid sex.)

Have you found any Easter basket-friendly candy designs that are NOT about fertility symbols?

MS MAGAZINE : SINGLED OUT : BLACK WOMEN

Ms magazine has an article called SINGLED OUT. It's about why the media is obsessed with single black women. The question of INDEPENDENCE is part of this. The article itself doesn't have a link but there is the MS BLOG. Watch the video and read the article!

"Sexism is real for all women. But the combination of femaleness and blackness is particularly devalued, sadly, too often among even black men."

KEANU REEVES : NEVER MARRIED MYSTERY MAN

Hello!  It's now almost November 2022 and Keanu has revealed a long time partner, an artist. My opinion is that he has taken his relationships with responsibility and consideration. So he is still part of my pantheon of stars!  The original post is below.

************

Today I elect actor Keanu Reeves to the NEVER MARRIED NO KIDS hall of fame.
I'm linking to a fairly recent article that outed him as actually having dinner with a woman in London. Keanu seems to have the spirit of those who actually like being alone and are OK without a serious relationship or any relationship at all. Of course, he may just be one celebrity who has managed to keep his personal life private. For years he was a mystery man, few interviews and little to say on them about his personal life. Seems to me Keanu Reeves is a person who can choose or not choose to be in a relationship. What do we know really? Keanu actually did have a serious relationship and almost became a father. Several years back his girlfriend gave birth to a still born daughter and a few years later she died in a car accident. That is tragic, and I can't imagine getting over either easily. Also, I'm no stranger to the many rumors that Keanu is actually a gay male and therefore we cannot expect him to have women in his life or become legally married. Still, Keanu is not known for his coupling.

GIFTS FOR MY NMNK FRIENDS : SOME GIFT GIVING TIPS

Sister here:
This year like just most people I'm on a budget. I'm giving token gifts (under $5 or made by me in less than an hour) to my friends, most of whom at this point, are childless people. Years ago an aunt of mine told me that Christmas was really for the children, and maybe that's so. She was referring to the "miracle of Santa Claus" and the wonderment that children experience finding gifts under a tree. I enjoy giving and receiving gifts, especially gifts that are "right on" and show that the giver really knows me, but I prefer to have a dinner party and cook a beautiful meal as my gift rather than battle the crowds or go into debt. So if you are wondering if I'm going to give you some GIFT GIVING TIPS, you are right, I am.

First of all, is there a Trader Joe's near you? If so, they have some $5 or under special holiday herbal teas and chocolate. Next, do you know how to knit or crochet? I know there's not enough time to make a sweater, but I'm making crocheted scrap soap scrubbers (presented with a fresh cake of perfumed soap) with scrap yarn. Most of my friends are concerned about their diet because of their weight or health and it's so tempting to make a variety of cookies from scratch until I think of how they will probably gain five pounds over the holidays without my contribution. I plan on giving little items for their collections when possible. Whatever it is they collect, I keep an eye out all year including at garage sales and thrift stores.

I wish you a happy holiday mainly because for many NMNK this is the worst time of the year, because there is so much emphasis on family and children. Some families really make their NMNK members feel uncomfortable or even unwelcome, so remember there is nothing wrong with staying home with some comedy DVDs and avoiding those people! Yours in spirit, Sister
